Mother’s Day is just around the corner. It’s a time to celebrate our moms or those who may have been our stand-in moms throughout our lives. Mothers make great sacrifices for their babies – from the time they are born through the rest of their lives. They sacrifice their time, efforts, energy and even the normalcy of their bodies. That’s where mommy makeovers come in to play. I’ve seen mother after mother come in my office saying that they want their bodies back that they had prior to their pregnancies. So for those of you who may be considering it, here is what a typical Mommy Makeover entails:
Tummy Tuck: The first thing you’re ready to do after having your baby (or however many you decide to have) is work the weight off. Many times, you can work it off, but the result of that becomes pesky, hanging skin. A tummy tuck will assist in getting rid of the extra skin and firming up your stomach area.
Liposuction: Liposuction will help get rid of the stretch marks that so often come with pregnancy. After poking, prodding, pushing and stretching of your skin from one or many babies, liposuction can help delete what we fondly refer to as the muffintop that sticks around even after you work off the post-pregnancy weight.
Breast Lift: They droop and sag after the baby has arrived. While we know they serve an important purpose in nurturing and providing nutrients for your baby, we know there are many who desire to have back the pre-baby breasts. The breast lift will raise your breasts to restore their once-more-perky look. With or without augmentation, the breast lift is an option to raise them up. Alternative or additional options include breast augmentation or adjustable breast augmentation – both which can enhance the size of your breasts, in correlation with the boosting them with a breast lift.

April is Physical Fitness Month, so it’s time for me to give it to you straight. Plastic surgery is not a replacement for having a healthy lifestyle. It may be true that surgeries and enhancements can provide you with your desired needs for appearance modifications or the places that your hard workouts at the gym aren’t resolving. The surgeries, however, are not a substitute for taking part in nutritious eating and physical activity that is necessary to live in a health-filled way. Surgery can be a kickstarter, but you need healthy solutions to continue to feel good and look great.

Water is of the essence. The human body is comprised of 60-75 percent water, and every functioning system in your body relies on water. Water consumption performs a vital role in digestion by helping the body eliminate solids, toxins, impurities and bacteria from our body. This can help after a cosmetic surgery for one, but more importantly, it should be a part of your daily activity. Be sure you are drinking at least 64 ounces a day. Many people don’t realize it, but the amount of water you drink each day has a direct effect on how healthy your skin is.

Take your vitamins. It’s not just something for the kiddos. Much of the food we eat is deficient in vitamins and minerals that you need for good health. Multivitamins are great for taking care of the nutrients that we need and should be taken on a daily basis. Are you aware of what vitamins can do for you? Take a look at this list and make sure you consult your surgeon or physician to take the proper dosage:

Vitamin A: Helps a great deal in improving your eyesight. Also aids in maintaining healthy skin. Find Vitamin A in: eggs, milk, apricots, carrots, spinach and sweet potatoes.

Vitamins B: Help generate energy that the body utilizes to carry out its activities. Participates actively in making red blood cells that carry oxygen to different parts of your body. Find Vitamin B in: whole grains, such as wheat and oats, fish and seafood, leafy green vegetables, dairy products like milk and yogurt, beans and peas.

Vitamin C: Strengthens your gums and muscles. Helpful for healing wounds and assist you in overcoming infections. Find Vitamin C in: citrus fruits, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage and strawberries.

Vitamin D: Strengthens your bones and teeth. Assists in absorbing calcium required by the body. Find Vitamin D in: Dairy products – milk and eggs and fish.

Vitamin E: Supports your lungs and also helps in formation of red blood cells. Find Vitamin E in: whole grains – wheat and oats, leafy green vegetables and nuts.

Vitamin K: Helps maintain normal levels of the blood-clotting proteins. Find Vitamin K in: Romaine lettuce, sage, oregano, cabbage, celery, sea vegetables, cucumber, leeks, cauliflower, tomatoes, pork and blueberries.

Here are some tips on finding the right daily vitamin from Everday Health.
Get moving. Another essential part of a healthy lifestyle, either pre- or post-plastic surgery, is physical activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that adults need AT LEAST two and a half hours of moderate intensity physical activity each week. Everyone has their preferred types of workout. For some, it’s running, for others, it is taking various aerobic classes at the gym. Personally, CrossFit has given me great results, and I love doing it. So pick the exercise that you can truly enjoy and that will have a positive impact on your health.

I get a lot of questions from patients about commercials advertising “scarless surgery.” I’m here to tell you, unless you’re a fetus, you’re going to scar after a doctor makes an incision into your skin. A skilled surgeon will, however, try to minimize the scar and make it less visible. If you’re still not satisfied with the appearance of your skin after surgery, there are a few simple things you can do to avoid thick or hypertrophic scarring or keloids.

The easiest way to avoid heavy scarring is to simply apply pressure to the womb. For example, I’ve noticed that women who wear tight jeans after a tummy tuck tend to have less scarring across their middle section.

There are also gels, gel sheeting, silicone and silicone sheeting that all have been clinically-proven to diminish scars and restore skin to a more natural texture and color.
While at work, you can take a pencil eraser and just push it up against the scar for about ten minutes a day, every day you have the scar.

I don’t recommend starting any of these techniques until around four weeks after your surgery. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I have been a plastic surgeon for more than a decade, and I can tell you that there is no such thing as a scarless surgery.

There have been far too many stories in the news about bogus doctors, specifically plastic surgeons, without proper licenses, certification, training or education who perform surgeries with less-than-stellar, and sometimes downright tragic, results. Knowing the background and certification of your plastic surgeon is imperative. Regardless of who you choose, do your due diligence and check the facts.

There are straightforward questions that any person can get answered to ensure that your surgeon is properly licensed, certified and able to deliver safe and effective results. Here are a few:

Verify your surgeon’s board certification and license of the doctor, which can be done through Texas’ (or your respective state’s) Board of Medicine. Confirm that the accreditation is, indeed, from a legitimate and trustworthy organization. Your doctor must be licensed to practice in the state they are in.

Not all doctors are alike. Be sure that the surgeon you are selecting can perform the surgeries listed on their available services. Just because a dermatologist is licensed, highly educated and trained in the dermatology field doesn’t mean they are the right choice for surgeries related to skin – like face lifts or liposuction. Choose the right doctor for the right procedure. Specialties exist for a reason.

Read reviews of the doctor you are considering. This will give you great insight into the performance of the surgeon, in addition to the environment, staff, processes and recovery you can expect.

Educate yourself about the anesthesiologist who works with your surgeon, as well as his or her licensing. The staff should be able to inform you about what type of anesthesia will be administered and by whom.

Find out if the facility where you will be having your procedure is Joint Commission Accredited. This can be found by the Gold Seal of Approval and mandates the highest standards in ambulatory and office-based surgery patient care. Patient safety and quality of care issues are at the forefront of Joint Commission standards and initiatives.

We have first-hand experience of patients who have come to us for fixes after having surgery performed by “surgeons” without the proper certification or misleading certifications. We have also seen horror stories in the national news. Plastic surgery is an investment. Make sure you are doing your homework to confirm that the investment is a wise one.

Review: I am a Registered Nurse working in San Antonio and believe me I
am very careful in choosing my health care providers. I know some of the
best and worse in the area, and Dr. Jeneby is the best! I started seeing
him almost 5 years ago for Fillers. He took the time to develop a treatment
plan that would decrease the appearance of acne scaring using fillers and
explore options of laser treatments. Through this experience I learned he
is a perfectionist and wants the best possible outcome for his patients. I
have wanted to have breast augmentation for years but could not find a
surgeon I could trust Dr. Jeneby earned that trust and proves he is the
Best of the Best through Joint Commissions accreditation. This goal seal of
approval is only awarded to those who exceed in patient care and treatment
in all areas of care. I had a great surgical experience with minimal pain
and down time from work. I have recommended him to many of my peers who are
just as pleased with their outcomes as I am. If you want the best of the best from a staff
that truly cares --- See Dr. Jeneby

Spring Break is upon us. Here comes the sun, temperatures in the 80s and the showcase of beach bods. Before you hit the waves, take care of your skin. Whether you’re 21 or 51, skin care should always be on your mind when you’re going to be spending longer periods of time outdoors. Here are some tips and other pieces of information to keep in mind:

The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The best preparation for the sun during Spring Break is an SPF30 broad spectrum protection. It should be applied every 80 minutes, because no SPF is waterproof.

If you are prone to hyperpigmentation and discoloration, sun exposure can excite excess melanin production causing your discoloration to worsen. Limit sun exposure and protect your skin with a hat and SPF. Avoid long periods of sun exposure to reduce a reoccurrence.
Excessive sweating due to outdoor activities can cause congestion to block the pores to the skin leading to blackheads and milia, especially on the hairline. Use a salicylic acid-based cleanser and Benzoil Peroxide as a spot treatment to kill bacteria.

Over-the-counter products are not regulated by the FDA, so they are not aggressive enough to go down to a cellular level to treat most skin care conditions. They can only target the surface of the skin. Pharmaceutical grade products are regulated by FDA and work at a cellular level to target skin concerns, such as wrinkles and discoloration.

Don’t think just because you’re in the shade that you won’t burn or your skin won’t be affected. Protect the skin you’re in, because you’ll have it for a lifetime.
